Does hybrid vehicle battery production pollute more than normal car batteries?

Tough to compare as there are no US based volume manufacturers of hybrid style (lithium ion or nickel metal hydride) batteries. the regulation and monitoring of volume based li-ion and nickel metal hydride occurs primarily outside of the US and within parts of the world where environmental protection may be a secondary concern. In the US, lead acid (normal car style) battery manufacturers are regulated and closely monitored. these guys have actually made HUGE strides to protect the environment. they recover, recycle and reuse better than any other industry in the US today (check out a little factoid on batteriesplus.com. There are some manufacturers working to develop cost effective production for lithium ion and nickel metal hydride in the US. Hopefully this will allow for competitive AND environmentally conscious production.

lithium batteries - are they really that good?

there is a lot of great information on the internet when it comes to batteries. i found that the key is finding the right battery – just posted a link to a good site on this. i know there is a lot of buzz on lithium chemistry right now especially for cordless tools. lithium is great- lighter weight, charges faster, etc. i found a great site that covers all sorts of faqs on batteries as they relate to where they're being used.

on cordless tools – i’ve gotten the best experience with nicd. takes a nice beating and stands up more to vibration and heat over lithium – b/c you know i’m working my tools! you’d think with all of the negative attention on lithium this summer and laptop batteries blowing up entire laptops - this particular chemistry should get its own pr campaign to make you choose it! a recent post i read had someone rebuilding a lithium ion laptop battery pack. i’d rather buy a well known after market brand like rayovac laptop batteries over burning down my house soldering lithium cells together. maybe that’s just me. i like my house.
